571.
** HEWLETT-PACKARD FLEXES MUSCLE
(USA, 5/19/93, 3B)
The only big computer maker that isn't choking is Hewlett-Packard. "If you
do a little arithmetic, it's not a big leap of faith to say that this company
could be larger than IBM by the end of the decade," says Hambrecht & Quist
analyst Robert Herwick. "It's on a roll."
572.
** APPLE'S CLAIMS DISMISSED IN MICROSOFT, HP CASE
(WSJ, 6/2/93, pg. B7)
A US District Court judge granted a motion to dismiss the remaining claims
against HP and Microsoft in a software infringement lawsuit brought by
Apple. Apple didn't oppose the decision saying the dismissal "will facilitate
a prompt appeal".
573.
** NEW ASSOCIATION IS EXPECTED TO SEEK INFRARED
STANDARD
(WSJ, 6/1/93, pg. B6)
HP is expected to announce its intention to form an industry association to
help establish a standard for infrared communications technology in
computers. HP is pursuing licensing agreements with Sun and AT&T.
574.
** NEXT HAS LINED UP HEWLETT'S SUPPORT FOR ITS SOFTWARE
(WSJ, 6/1/93, pg. B6)
Next, in a move to bolster its fledgling software business, said it agreed to
work with HP to adapt Next's software to run on some HP computers. HP
will begin offering, as an option, its workstations with the NextStep software
in the second quarter of 1994.
575.
** BLUE ODYSSEY SEARCHES FOR APOLLO
(MRS, 5/25/93, pg. 24)
Enabling Technologies Group and IBM have announced a program to help
users of HP Apollo workstations migrate to the RS/6000. Christine
Samolyk, marketing manager of HP's open migration program, points out
that HP has a program of its own including something IBM doesn't have -
four years of experience in helping Domain/OS users make the transition.
HP has an upgrade program, including financial incentives.
576.
** TRUCKER MIGRATES
(CW, 5/24/93, pg. 72)
Truck manufacturer Paccar and integrator Innovative Information Systems,
Inc. have put the finishing touches on a project in which Innovative
Information Systems migrated Paccar's warehouse control system from an
IBM 8100 to an HP 9000 running Unix.

577.
** IBM's JOB 1: CUSTOMER CONFIDENCE
(DM, 5/15/93, pg. 124)
A new DATAMATION MIS survey, based on some 3,400 respondents
reveals dramatic evidence of a serious deterioration in customer attitudes
toward IBM. The big factor, at 35% of mentions, was sales, service and
support. The second biggest negative factor, at 30% of mentions, was cost.
578.
** REPACKAGING SERVICE
(MRS, 5/25/93, pg. 25)
IBM rolled out a revamped service program for its RS/6000. One example
of a previously free service incorporated into the new program is the support
provided by sales engineers. This support used to be a no charge service
under what was called marketing support. The new program consists of six
service selections.
579.
** IBM OFFERS TESTING SERVICES
(EN, 5/24/93, pg. 10)
IBM, as part of its ongoing attempt to generate new revenues, has opened
the doors of its Boca Raton Technical Services group to commercial
customers in need of computer system and subsystem testing. In addition to
electronic test of motherboards and circuits, the facility can also perform
physical and mechanical "shake and bake" tests, noise level test and test for
FCC radio interference certification. Software-oriented services are also
being marketed.
580.
** IBM OFFERS WIRELESS LINKS TO AS/400
(EN, 5/224/93, pg. 15)
IBM announced software for enabling wireless communications between
AS/400 midrange hosts and alphanumeric pagers or DOS PCs via existing
network services. The AS/400 can also function as a gateway, enabling
mobile access to databases on mainframes and Unix hosts.
581.
** IBM TO CUT HOST SOFTWARE PRICES
(CW, 5/24/93, pg. 1)
IBM's new mainframe pricing plans include payments based on the number
of end users attached to the mainframe or on how much of the host is
actually used to run the software. IBM also said it would hold the line on
mainframe software price increases until at least 1995 and will waive its
usual annual increases this year and next.
582.
** COMMENTS
(UGX, 5/31/93, pg. 8)
Justifying IBM's move into systems integration and facilities management,
Jim Cannavino of IBM claims that IBM has unrivaled experience in making
quite incompatible systems work together - "mostly our own".

583.
** WINDOWS NT HARDWARE SUPPORT DEAL INCLUDES HP, DEC
AND NCR
(OST, 5/24/93, pg. 4)
Microsoft has cut deals with HP, Digital and NCR that will have those
hardware vendors provide multivendor customer service and support for NT.
While HP is clear that it wants to support NT as a client, server support is
another issue.
584.
** COMMENTS
(UGX, 5/31/93, pg. 8)
David Flack, the esteemed editor of McGraw-Hill's UnixWorld magazine,
has hung the tag "threatware" on NT.
585.
** PROPRIETARY AND NETWORK OPERATING SYSTEM, NOT
UNIX, WILL LOSE OUT TO NT, SAYS INFOCORP
(UGX, 5/24/93, pg. 5)
Unix will continue to maintain its grasp on the high-end multi-user server
market for the foreseeable future, according to a report by InfoCorp.
Windows NT will only have a 12% share on the server market - 11%
revenue - by 1997. Unix should have a 64%, or 62% by value, during the
same time period. Proprietary operating systems revenue share will slip
from 29% to 22%.

NCR ARTICLES
***********************************************************
586.
** NCR TO DEBUT WORK-FLOW TOOL SUITE
(OST, 5/24/93, pg. 8)
NCR plans to introduce a suite of Windows-based tools designed to help
users implement work-flow capabilities throughout an enterprise. The
client-server tools, called ProcessIT, are designed to eventually work with
any Windows or Unix application and to perform functions locally or on
existing mainframe systems.

PYRAMID ARTICLES
***********************************************************
587.
** PYRAMID'S ORACLE-BASED CLUSTERING SYSTEM
(UGX, 5/31/93, pg. 2)
Pyramid has introduced Valence Cluster, the first product from its co-
development efforts with Oracle. The product provides clustering
capabilities for its MIServer and ES range of servers supporting the Oracle 7
Parallel Server option database.

588.
** SUN OPENS NEW BUSINESS UNIT
(WN, 6/93, pg. 6)
In a move consistent with its longtime philosophy of open systems, Sun has
created SPARC Technology Business (STB), an internal organization
commissioned to proliferate SPARC Technology in the marketplace. STB
has a four-tiered mission: to make the designs for Sun microprocessor chips
available, to provide complete designs for Sun motherboards, to offer
operating system-independent hardware and to provide full engineering
support services.
589.
** SPARC 1000: HIGHEST TPS IN PRICE RANGE
(OST, 5/24/93, pg. 12)
Sun's new SPARCserver 1000 desktop multiprocessor has reported the
highest transactions per second for any machine selling for less than
$200,000. The HP ratings, though, reveal how much Sun is relying on
multiprocessing to achieve a high TPC number. For example, while Sun's
performance betters HP's by 33 percent, Sun is using eight times as many
processors to do it.

TANDEM ARTICLES
***********************************************************
590.
** TANDEM TO OPEN UP GUARDIAN
(OST, 5/24/93, pg. 4)
Tandem is moving to inject some standard interfaces into its proprietary
Guardian operating system. By the end of this year, the maker of fault-
tolerant systems expects to offer toolkits for developers in the POSIX
environment. Also Tandem will offer XPG4 compliance over the next 18
months. The new version of Guardian will remove the limit on the number
of processes a given processor can handle.

** FUJITSU READIES NEW PRODUCTS AS MAINFRAMES WANE
(WSJ, 6/1/93, pg. B4)
By the time its mainframe sales start to decline, it will have released new
lines of products designed to give it the edge in the coming age of
multimedia electronics. Fujitsu's expertise in hardware runs most of the
multimedia gamut, from advanced telephone switches designed to handle
huge amounts of video data to multimedia a PC called the FM-Towns, which
Fujitsu introduced in 1989.
592.
** WANG MIGRATION IMMINENT
(MRS, 5/25/93, pg. 18)
It has been nine months since Wang has filed Chapter 11. Thirty-eight
percent of Wang users surveyed are actively involved with a migration. Of
that 38 percent, the dominant migration choices are AS/400s, PCs/LANs and
RS/6000s.
593.
** UNIX PERFORMANCE TEST PUBLISHED
(CW, 5/24/93, pg. 2)
Unix International has published a one-size-fits-all standard for measuring
system performance in mixed-vendor enterprise networks. The Universal
Measurement Architecture (UMA) proposal is a set of specified interfaces
that will allow users to "harvest" performance data from operating systems,
including non-Unix systems and databases.
594.
** STUDY: COMPUTER ROI AVERAGES 54%
(CW, 5/24/93, pg. 10)
A study from MIT contradicts the theory that there is little payback form
information systems spending by claiming that major corporations are
showing average annual returns on investments (ROI) of 54% of their
computer purchases.
595.
** AMDAHL, ICL, FUJITSU POOL SPARC UNIX RESOURCES
(UGX, 5/31/93, pg. 1)
Fujitsu, ICL and Amdahl will announce details of a strategic technology
alliance, which will be the creation of a common Unix application
environment, to be supported across their Sparc RISC based systems. The
plan is to combine elements of their current Unix offerings - ICL's DRS/NX
Server, Fujitsu's UPX implementations and Amdahl's UTS mainframe Unix-
and cross license key value added products.
